Queenstown Airport has applied for consent for a building for Aviation Security Services (Avsec) and, if approved, the building could be operational by next winter.
Aeronautical general manager Simon Barr said the airport had been planning the building for the past 18 months with Avsec.
Avsec had outgrown its current facilities in the terminal building, Mr Barr said, though passengers would not be affected.
In the resource consent application, it is said the building would house a central interview room, a breakout room, a training room, reception and waiting area, an office and associated areas such as bathrooms and storerooms.
''The Avsec activity is a necessary and anticipated activity at an airport,'' Mr Barr said.
''This proposal fulfils an immediate demand for new Avsec facilities at Queenstown Airport.''
Avsec carries out aviation security services throughout New Zealand, including screening passengers and their luggage.
