Police are warning motorists to keep the speed down and keep left after issuing about 15 tickets and attending two car crashes at the weekend.
Const Greg Nolet, of Wanaka, said yesterday a driver lost control of his vehicle in grit on Mt Aspiring Rd, near the Glendhu Bluffs, and hit roadside barriers.
The driver was not injured but the car was seriously damaged and had to be towed.
A second car accident this weekend occurred when a Brazilian motorist, used to driving on the right-hand side of the road, pulled into the wrong lane at the intersection of State Highways 6 and 8 at Mt Iron on Saturday.
The man continued in the right lane down the hill towards the Cardrona River, panicked when he saw other vehicles approaching, and pulled off to the right side of the road, ending up against a bank.
Const Nolet said the incident could have been "disastrous" but fortunately no-one was injured.
The man's car was extensively damaged.
Police were targeting roads to skifields because many drivers using those were not used to winter driving conditions, Const Nolet said.
