A Wanaka-based skydiving business is expanding and bringing in a new purpose-built aircraft for its thrillseeking customers.

Skydive Lake Wanaka has bought a custom-made Cresco Xstol from Hamilton plane manufacturers Pacific Aerospace in a bid to increase passenger capacity at its Wanaka Airport-based skydiving operation.

Built to meet the specifications of company owners Jools and Dave Hall, the plane is costing $2 million.

The Pratt and Whitney turbine engine had a four-blade propeller, which was quieter than the existing plane used for skydiving, resulting in lower noise levels, Mrs Hall said,A bigger aircraft interior doubles passenger capacity and reduces the overall number of flights required per day, lowering impact on the environment.

"We are constantly striving to enhance the experience for our customers, as well as undertaking steps to be environmentally-responsible operators, Mrs Hall said.

Delivery of the plane was scheduled for November and the busy summer season, she said.

Skydive Lake Wanaka holds a Tourism New Zealand Qualmark Green rating for its environmentally-responsible tourism and it has also won the Rankers people's choice award for the best skydiving activity in New Zealand.

In 2008 the company won the best small operator award from New Zealand Tourism.
