A spike in Wanaka arrests has Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell wondering about the causes.

Police arrested 13 people throughout last week in what he described yesterday as "one of the top weeks for arrests of the year".

Most offending was of a minor disorderly nature.

Three people were charged with disorderly behaviour, another three charged with unlawfully being in yards or buildings, two men were charged with possessing cannabis, and a woman was charged with assault after she threw a glass at someone.

One man was charged with an assault on a female, after a domestic incident.

One person was charged with offensive behaviour, and an intoxicated person was taken into protective custody.

"I am not sure what we can attribute all that to. The ski season is still going, but it is coming to an end.

"I think it was just an unusual week. But there were no burglaries, no thefts ex cars," Snr Sgt Grindell said.

Officers investigating a spate of holiday-home burglaries would probably begin to wrap up their inquiry soon, he said.

Between 20 and 30 young people have now been referred to police youth aid and three young adults are going through the judicial system.

Two sexual assault investigations commenced several weeks ago were also progressing, with statements coming in from witnesses, Snr Sgt Grindell said.
