113 tickets issued on roads to skifields

Police have issued 113 traffic tickets to motorists travelling to Wanaka skifields during the school holidays.

And a surge in the numbers of Australian ski holidaymakers was being reflected in traffic-infringement statistics, Wanaka sub-area commander Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said.

"Surprisingly, we've issued a lot of speeding tickets to Aussies," he said.

Two Australians were the occupants of a rental Ford Focus car, which crashed after its driver lost control on ice while travelling along the Cardrona Valley Rd yesterday, he said.

Police highway patrols had targeted speeding drivers rushing to Wanaka skifields along the Cardrona Valley Rd and Mt Aspiring Rd, Snr Sgt Grindell said.

About 177 tickets were given to drivers during June last year, he said.

He described the number of "infringement notices" being issued as "nothing major".

"Overall, we've actually had less complaints about people's driving habits compared with last year," Snr Sgt Grindell said.
