Police have slammed fireworks-wielding ''idiots'' after people were spotted firing skyrockets from their cars.
On Monday night, emergency services were kept busy following reports of people behaving inappropriately with fireworks, Senior Sergeant Dave Scott, of Dunedin, said.
In Oamaru, police received reports at 8.05pm and 11.20pm occupants of a bronze-coloured station wagon fired skyrockets at passers-by in the Reed St and Centennial Park areas.
Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said police would be following up with the registered owner of the vehicle.
''[Fireworks] are very dangerous and it's a silly time of the year when people start using them,'' he said.
''They can be good fun ... in a controlled and proper manner, but possibly mixed with alcohol and a bit of stupidity from youth, [fireworks] causes some problems.''
In Dunedin, there were several reports of fireworks being set off in the middle of roads.
''Fireworks tend to bring out the idiot in people,'' Snr Sgt Scott said.
Police would have no hesitation in charging a person ''if they caused an injury to another person'', he said.
Last year, the Fire Service attended 23 fireworks-related fires in the lower South Island during Guy Fawkes.
