The newly appointed chief executive of the Otago Regional Council is looking forward to returning to the South Island.

Council chairman Stephen Woodhead confirmed yesterday Peter Bodeker will replace Graeme Martin, who is retiring.

The announcement came after the New Zealand Seafood Industry Council earlier announced Mr Bodeker had resigned as chief executive, and would begin the new role in mid-November.

Mr Bodeker told the Otago Daily Times he was excited by the prospect of the position and the potential of the region's primary sector.

His background in the dairy, forestry and seafood sector had prepared him for the local government role, he said.

"Presenting arguments around compulsory fees and levies to constituents, working with boards of elected representatives and providing whole-of-community services is something I am familiar with, so, while it has not been at a local council, it has been as close it can be in the private sector."

Originally from Christchurch, Mr Bodeker said he had been looking for an opportunity to return to the South Island with his family, to live and work.

"It is a commitment, a permanent shift as far as I am concerned, and we are looking forward to moving there."

Mr Woodhead said Mr Bodeker was a strategic thinker with proven strong leadership skills.

"His depth of experience in the primary sector, balancing productive interests with the need for long-term sustainability, will ensure he adapts quickly to the local government scene, and leads our staff as they implement the long-term plan."

New Zealand Seafood Industry Council chairman Dave Sharp praised Mr Bodeker's role in leading the organisation through a significant restructuring process.
