ORC legal action

The Otago Regional Council has issued five infringement notices in four months and has four pending legal proceedings.

The legal action relates to actions where the council has judged there to be significant effects on the environment.

Infringement notices were issued for backyard burning (2), burning prohibited materials (1) and discharging effluent where it may enter water (2).

Legal proceedings were pending for cases involving riverbed plugging (2), disturbing the bed of a river and discharging contaminants into water (1), and discharging oil where it may enter water (1).

Two infringement notices had been issued where people had failed to comply with effluent ponding rules.

Environmental services manager Martin King said up to early January the council had completed 104 dairy inspections. Eight were found to have minor non-compliance and two a significant non-compliance.
