An Oamaru schoolboy who was given the thumbs-up by X Factor judges last weekend, says singing is in the family genes.

Alex Familton (14) wowed television show judges Daniel Bedingfield, Stan Walker, Melanie Blatt and Ruby Frost with his rendition of Tiki Taane's Always On My Mind, to make it through to the next round of the TV talent show, but he said he was more nervous about flying to Auckland than he was when he actually performed.

''It is a song I like, and I knew it off by heart at the time of the audition, so I wasn't nervous about singing. I was more nervous getting to the stage than I was when I was singing.''

He said he first sang solo as a 12 year-old in the Oamaru Intermediate School choir, and added that his family was ''very musical''.

Both his uncle Frank Diack and great uncle Frank Williams were both professional singers.

His sister Emma, also auditioned for the show at an earlier stage, but did not make it through to the televised auditions, which were held in Auckland.

Although Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton was his uncle, Alex said he was more interested in a full-time career as a musician than as a politician.

He said he was not sure what to expect about the ''Boot Camp'' stage of the show, but was ''confident'' that he could turn in a good performance.
