Work is scheduled to start this month on a dump station in Oamaru to take effluent and waste water from campervans and caravans.
The town has been without a public caravan and campervan dump station for years and the Waitaki District Council has been investigating possible sites for almost a year with the help of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association.
A site has been selected at the northern boundary of Oamaru outside the Waitaki Transport yard 50m to 60m south of the Detroit Diner on the State Highway 1 road reserve which has approval from the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).
The council has budgeted $10,000 for the project.
Initially, the council investigated a site in Humber St near the Oamaru railway station, but struck difficulties because of the cost and objections from neighbours.
That made obtaining resource consent for the project problematic, so the council decided to look elsewhere.
Council assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said approval and a service agreement had been reached with the NZTA and consultation with adjacent businesses had also been successful.
The only dump station available in Oamaru is at a caravan and holiday park.
