The slogan ''Chalk Like an Egyptian'' may have been catchy but it was aimed at delivering a serious message to Egypt's leaders - stop the bashing, rapes, murders and discrimination against women in the current unrest.

The afternoon protest at Waitaki Girls' High School was organised by the school's Amnesty International branch members, who used cardboard boxes to build a pyramid to which pupils attached messages written in chalk and on black paper.

One of the organisers, Chrystal McIntyre (17), said pupils and staff were also signing a petition, which would be sent to Amnesty's New Zealand headquarters, then combined with others and forwarded to Egypt.

The petition called on Egyptian political leaders to condemn sexual violence and discrimination without reservation in Egypt and propose a comprehensive strategy to combat it in consultation with women's rights groups and the National Council of Women.

Chrystal said the campaign against discrimination in Egypt was chosen by Amnesty for National Freedom Week in New Zealand.
