Whitestone Cheese picked up 23 medals at this year's national cheese awards, including six golds.

The Oamaru cheesemaker's general manager Simon Berry said yesterday the company's performance at the Champions of Cheese awards, judged last Sunday, in Auckland, was more than it expected.

"It's a thrill to have so many golds awarded this year," Mr Berry said.

The gold medals were awarded to Whitestone's Dansey Pass (goat) cheese, Vintage Windsor Blue (blue), Creamy Havarti (European-style) and Island Stream (sheeps' milk).

Two gold medals were awarded for packaging - Whitestone's cheese tin and its four cheese platter sold in supermarkets.

It also won nine silver and eight bronze medals.

The champion of champions award was won by Mainland Special Reserve Creamy Blue.
