Beat the price rise is the message the Waitaki Resource Recovery Park has for people who want to recycle old television sets.

From May 1, the price to recycle cathode ray tube sets will rise throughout New Zealand from $25 to $40.

There are also minor price rises for some other e-waste, such as printers, cathode ray screens, fax machines and scanners.

The park's business manager, Dave Clare, said the price rises were national and not set by the Waitaki Resource Recovery Park.

''We have no control over it and we want to warn people, to avoid any flak for our staff from May 1,'' he said.

''We want to encourage the local community to have a final TV clear-out before May 1, when the new pricing structure comes into effect.''

The e-waste recycling programme had been a major success in the Waitaki district.

When the campaign finished in August, 1800 televisions had been sent away for recycling, almost double what was expected from the district.

''Our community really got behind the programme and we don't want them to miss out before the new price comes in.''

Part of the cause of the price rise had been the Government's failure to introduce a product stewardship scheme, promised as part of a 2010 national e-waste recycling programme.

That scheme, expected to be in place this year, would have had a proportion of the purchase price of an electronic item go into a central fund to cover costs of recycling for that product.

''That has not yet eventuated and ... some harsh realities have surfaced, which has resulted in pricing for e-waste being reviewed,'' Mr Clare said.

One of the biggest factors had been freight costs to centralised recycling centres.

Mr Clare said the Waitaki District Council would be asked to lobby the Government for the stewardship scheme to be introduced as soon as possible.
