Wallaby anyone?

Freeze-dried wallaby is on the menu in a redevelopment of the old Oamaru milk treatment station.

The pest animal is listed among a range of proteins outlined by Contract Freeze Dry NZ Ltd in a resource consent application.

The Waitaki District Council in May granted the necessary consent for the company to operate a freeze-drying factory.

An activity description for the application listed wallaby among other wild meats to be processed at the site.

"The consent is sought for a modern freeze-drying plant," the council consent report said.

"The products range from fruit and berries, bee pollen, dairy foods, to all sorts of meat including lamb, beef, chicken, fish, venison, rabbit, hare, offal and wallaby."

The application did not state where the wallaby would be sourced but the pest is in the Waitaki Valley hinterland.

The former milk treatment complex, built in the 1960s, has been empty for some time.

It sits within a rural residential zone under the Waitaki district plan.

Contract Freeze Dry directors Brett and Kara Crossan used to be shareholders in the Galley restaurant, in Oamaru.

They are also directors of Back Country Foods, based in Invercargill.

A recommending report by Marian Weaver, for the council, said the application fitted the criteria to be non-notified.

Neighbours surrounding the site had previously given their written assent.

The new operation would entail a range of trucking movements up to six times a day.

The application also stated two staff would be required initially, and over time, up to six more might be required.
