Queen Victoria is not amused - she has turned her back on the latest exhibition at the North Otago Museum.

On the wall overlooking the newly opened "Steampunk: Fabulous Fashions, Original Inspirations" exhibition is a photograph of Queen Victoria facing away from the costumes and displays, with the balloon comment "We are not amused".

But museum curator Chloe Searle is sure visitors will be, by the imaginative costumes and displays in the exhibition.

The exhibition will run until March.

It features garments from this year's steampunk fashion show alongside original Victorian items from the museum's own collection, reworked into steampunk-style displays.

One even includes hundreds of pocket watch parts and faces.

A changing line-up will be presented over the course of the exhibition.

The first selection of costumes includes a lunar explorer and a pioneering aviatrix.

Treasures from the museum's collection on display this month include Thomas Forrester's microscope and a Victorian fan decorated with a real hummingbird.

Miss Searle said both the steampunk creations and original Victorian items were amazing, inspired and inspiring.

The exhibition is on every day, and entry is free.
