They are at it again.

The Elephant Rocks area, in the Waitaki Geopark near Duntroon, has again been struck by vandals, this time in the carpark.

About noon on Sunday, a truck began doing doughnuts on the grassed area of the carpark.

This came after an increase in visitors damaging the rocks.

Landowner Maylene Fenwick said she was disappointed the vandalism was continuing.

"It’s just common, unfortunately, nowadays."

A witness saw it happen and alerted her through Facebook, she said.

The carpark had to be closed for the day to allow it to dry out, which was frustrating for a long weekend.

"These are some of the busiest days that people come in because they’re holidaying in the area and they’ve all had to park out in the older carpark, which doesn’t really hold a lot of cars."

This was the second time this has happened this month, Mrs Fenwick said.

"The last time was only a few weeks ago."

She hoped they could gravel the carpark in the future, but that would come at a large cost.

"Then it won’t be quite the same temptation for people to come in and rip up the grass and skid around in the mud when it rains.

"It’s just not quite in the budget at the moment."

They had already spent $25,000 on new fences, signs and some gravel work two years ago.
