An unlicensed teen made a trail of sparks driving a classic car on three wheels and a rim during a police pursuit around Oamaru early on Saturday morning.

An 18-year-old North Otago man faces four charges after fleeing police in a 1973 Daimler for 14km before he was caught in Elderslie early on Saturday.

Sergeant Bruce Martin, of the Alexandra-based rural drink-drive team, said the man failed to stop for police on Chelmer St shortly before 1.30am.

He then drove off at speed, hitting a bank on Saleyards Rd, where he damaged a tyre, before again fleeing the scene.

Sgt Martin said the driver then headed towards Weston, with police abandoning the pursuit after about 3km due to the man's poor driving.

The man had driven the vehicle on a wheel rim for several kilometres, he said.

Police arrested the teen outside his home address in Elderslie on Weston-Ngapara Rd.

He was charged with failing to stop for police, reckless driving, driving while forbidden, and possessing utensils for cannabis.

He will appear in the Oamaru District Court tomorrow.

Police attended another pursuit in Oamaru, after a 38-year-old male failed to stop for a police patrol car on Friday morning, Senior Constable Carl Pedersen said. The man was later stopped on Beach Rd and his vehicle impounded.

He was processed for drink-driving after recording a level of 675mcg. The legal limit is 400mcg.

On Saturday a 42-year-old male, forbidden from driving and with previous drink-driving convictions, recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 442mcg by the rural drink-drive team.

Meanwhile, another motorist was forbidden from driving for 12 hours after recording a breath-alcohol reading of 400mcg, the legal limit.
