Two killed in crash near Oamaru

Two people have been killed in a two-vehicle crash involving a truck on State Highway 1 near Oamaru this morning.

The accident occurred about 9.30am at Alma, about 5km south of Oamaru.

Police confirmed about 12.40pm that two people had died.

The highway remains closed as the Serious Crash Unit and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Team investigate, and a police inquiry is under way.

There was a strong response to the crash. At one point this morning there were four Fire and Emergency NZ vehicles, two ambulances and two rescue helicopters at the scene.

The truck was  believed to be heading north.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Alex Norris earlier said crews from Weston, Ōamaru and Waitaki responded to the crash.

Norris said crews used specialised equipment to free the occupants of a vehicle.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said the highway was closed and road users should expect delays and avoid the area if possible.
