Charlotte Cunningham (14), of Waitaki Girls' High School, tests her dribbling skills at the North Otago turf at Centennial Park yesterday.

A new turf should be in place on the well-used Oamaru grounds before the start of the next hockey season on April 1, North Otago Recreational Turf Trust chairman Ray Simpson said.

The $420,000 project to replace the 17-year-old recreational turf got a $95,000 funding boost from the Otago Community Trust on Sunday, and the trust had set aside $140,000 to replace the playing surface, which had benefited from a ``very strict maintenance management programme''.

The principal user of the turf, the North Otago Hockey Association, has about 600 members.
