Town split over proposed public toilets

The proposed site for new public toilets in Waimate is causing a stink in the town.

The council has decided to replace two toilets just north of its headquarters in Queen St with new toilets about 20m further south.

But Mayor John Coles, who voted against the new site, wants the council to rescind its decision at its meeting on Tuesday.

Residents are backing that move with a 200-signature petition.

Mr Coles has put notices of motions to Tuesday's meeting revoking the decision to move the toilets and having the new facilities on the site of the old ones.

The existing toilets, virtually at the corner of Queen and Victoria Sts, are closer to town.

Parking is available for buses and cars and there is existing disabilty access.

The proposed new site is on Seddon Square's Ian Bennington walkway, a tribute to a well-known resident.

Opponents say putting the toilets there is disrespectful, too costly, and would ruin views of houses overlooking the square.

Both Mr Coles and Cr Matt Henderson voted against the new site last month, but five other councillors supported it.

On Tuesday, the council will consider Mr Coles' motions to change the site after the public forum at 1pm, when ratepayers are expected to make their views known.

Mr Coles was not surprised by the opposition to the new site and said some councillors had not adequately read public opinion.
