Oamaru is to stage its first "Rippa" tournament.
Rippa is a rugby variant gaining popularity throughout New Zealand.
The North Otago Rugby Union has been promoting it in primary schools throughout North Otago, and has organised a tournament spread over two days, a week apart.
More than 20 teams are expected to take part.
Rippa is similar to touch rugby, but a flag is taken from the belt of an opposing player to constitute a tackle.
It is a game of continuity, with no kicking, and teams have to score within six "rips", or the ball is handed to the opposing team.
Junior rugby administrator, Murray Linwood, said there had been a lot of interest in the concept from schools.
The game gave young players the opportunity to develop the concepts of attack and defence.
The tournament is to be held at Whitestone Contracting Stadium on October 30 and November 7, from 12.30pm to 2.30pm each day.
The teams, of up to nine players, must comprise at least four girls and four boys, with six on the field at any one time.
Entries for the Rippa tournament close today.
