Instead, the din denoted the delivery of donations of non-perishable foods for disadvantaged North Otago families during the annual Toot for Tucker appeal.
For more than an hour, noisy cars and young runners canvassed the streets of Oamaru and surrounding districts, greeting and thanking donors as they went.
Fay Birtles, of the North Otago Lions Club, said the evening had demonstrated the remarkable generosity of the community.
The giving nature of people was again surprising, with a "mountain" of non-perishable food collected, Mrs Birtles said.
All the donated goods were taken to the Oamaru foodbank, where they were yesterday being sorted and stored for assistance to families in need.
The event had been organised and promoted by the Lions Club of North Otago, and was supported by St John, the Fire Service, Columba Scouts, the Air Training Corps, Scott's Own Sea Scouts and St John Youth.
