''We wanted to show the people more - so the public can have a deeper understanding of our culture,'' organiser Api Fifita said.
On Friday, a modern and traditional sports day was held at St Kevin's College and on Saturday, the wider community and support networks for the Tongan community were invited to a celebration of culture at St Kevin's College, which had as its theme ''enriching Waitaki with our Tongan wisdom''.
More than 500 people took part in the weekend's events.
It is estimated there could be up to 2000 Tongan people living in Waitaki, with the number growing rapidly in the past two years.
''They love it here,'' Mrs Fifita said.
''The most important thing for us here is the environment; very safe, this is very laid back - this reminds us of back home.''
One of the main support networks for the Tongan Community is Alliance Group, as employers.
Mrs Fifita also thanked Pacific Trust Canterbury, North End New World and the Waitaki District Council.
She said a lot of work, effort and time went into organising the events over two days to properly showcase the rich and diverse Tongan culture.
