Teen killed in Waimate crash named

Police have named a Waimate teenager who was killed in a crash in the town on Tuesday night.

Aaron Thomas Pinnell (17) was the sole occupant of the Subaru WRX car which was driven along King St about 9.50pm "at speed", Sergeant Mike van der Heyden said yesterday.

Mr Pinnell lost control of the vehicle and it struck a concrete power pole, shattering it and ripping it from the ground.

He was killed instantly.

The speed he was travelling at was yet to be determined and serious crash investigators were at the scene yesterday.

There was a witness who was travelling behind the car. Power was cut to a large area of Waimate after the crash.

King St has a 50kmh speed limit.

Mr Pinnell's family and those who were first on the scene were receiving support from Victim Support, Sgt van der Heyden said.
