The pair will mark their 34th Southern Crawl Classic Car Rally this Saturday.
The couple have competed in every rally since the competition began.
They had won it once and hoped not to win it again, as the winner was expected to organise the next rally, they said.
Mrs McKee (76), the navigator, said she had got lost only once, during the first rally.
Mr McKee (76) said the couple had kept every certificate from the competition and were now in need of a bigger wall to display them.
The event was fun and one to look forward to.
He felt the competition had taken him to every back road in the South Island.
Mrs McKee described the event as a long day with drivers having to get up early to be ready to start by 8am.
In the first two or three rallies there were several arguments between other competitors.
"There were quite a few domestics as [the rally] was new to everyone."
But there were plenty of fun times over the years.
Mr McKee recalled large blocks of chocolate hidden under bridges, while Mrs McKee remembered the rally that ended with mulled wine in Omarama and one woman who became brave enough to tell everyone how displeased she was with the rally.
This year the couple, who did their first rally in a Daimler van and more recently in a BMW Z-3, said they would do it this year, reluctantly, in a Holden Commodore, so their son and his partner could join them.
The rally leaves Scott’s Brewery on the Oamaru waterfront at 8am tomorrow.
