Skifield is still open

The Awakino skifield near Kurow is still open - if enough people still want to ski.

Waitaki Ski Club secretary David Campbell said skiing was still possible, despite the recent arrival of warmer weather.

"The snow cover on the upper slopes of Awakino is lasting well and the skifield plans to open for those keen enough to hike up to these slopes for a rare chance to ski in November.

"Regular snowfalls and cooler weather during October has meant that the snow cover higher up has lasted."

The main tow had lost snow in some places, but "this won't stop people being able to access the upper bowls".

Ski club captain John Hamilton said the club made the most of conditions to reopen the skifield over Labour Weekend, and about 30 people enjoyed "some of the best skiing of the season".
