Debbie Devon regularly visits the spot on State Highway 1 where her 15-year-old daughter, Casey, was killed in a car crash last October.

The site, south of the Waitaki River bridge, had become a memorial to Casey Devon and Levi McKenzie (18), who died after a 16-year-old driver lost control of the car and hit a power pole.

Since the day of the crash, flowers, notes, and even tinsel - put up at Christmas time - have adorned the site and two crosses - pink for Casey and blue and yellow for Levi - were recently added.

It was a special place for the families and friends of Casey and Levi and showed how much they were loved and how their deaths had affected so many, Ms Devon said.

The grieving mother was distressed to learn last Friday the site had been cleared, leaving only the crosses.

She initially thought it might have been removed by a roading authority but has found that was not the case.

‘‘Obviously, somebody didn't like it.''

No-one had approached her or Levi's family with a problem, yet somebody had taken it on themselves to remove it.

‘‘It's not their right to make that decision to take everything down, whoever did it. To us, it's just devastating.''

‘‘It's the last place where our kids were. It's a special place for us,'' she said.

It should also serve an educational purpose, reminding people what happened and that two young people were killed.

Ms Devon wanted the items returned to the site, saying they would mean nothing to whoever took them but had a lot of sentimental value to the families who were still trying to cope with their losses. The site had been kept tidy, she said.

When contacted, Detective Kevin Kirkman said he had spoken to several people in the Waitaki Bridge area and believed any problems or issues had been dealt with.

He understood the items taken would not be returned but there should not be further issues if more items were left at the site. He did not elaborate further.
