"Beware: Silent Attack Dog On Premises" reads the rather menacing sign in the windscreen of Ros Booker's motor home.

Rodney - the attack dog - was basking in the sun at the Glenavy Domain yesterday, looking anything but menacing. The little dog loved travelling, sitting up and watching where he was going during his owner's many motor home trips.

Mrs Booker (68) is the instigator of a "singles" motor home rally, an initiative which followed the death of her husband 15 months ago.

She wanted to keep travelling and meet other people for companionship.

When she advertised the first rally at Ealing, on the Rangitata River in Mid Canterbury, in November, she had replies from all over the South Island, with singles attending from Mataura to Nelson.

Those attending arrived as 14 strangers but left as 14 friends, she said.

This week's rally, based at the Glenavy Domain, also attracted 14 people and the next rally will be at Hanmer Springs in February.

The group enjoyed a barbecue at the home of motor home enthusiast Fay Weller on Wednesday night, and were heading to the Glenavy Hotel for dinner last night.

They had planned to play petanque yesterday, but thought the ball could get lost in the long grass so they were sitting around relaxing and chatting.

Mrs Booker and Rodney will soon be on the road heading to Alexanders Holiday Park, in Picton, which is owned by her son, for the summer.
