"It's a low trick," was how Bryan Ludemann described the killing of two lambs and the injuring of another two on the Oamaru Hospital hill reserve.

It is not just the death and injuring of the lambs that worries him, so much as endangering people who walk the scenic Skyline Walkway through the reserve and neighbours' children who play there.

Mr Ludemann found the two lambs on Saturday morning when he was going around about 100 ewes and their lambs grazing the reserve he has leased from from the Waitaki District Council for about 12 years.

One was possibly shot twice - one wound was perhaps an exit wound - and the other shot twice, with a additional graze that appeared to have been caused by a bullet.

Later, he found two other wounded animals, which he treated with antibiotics.

This was the first time he had any problem with stock being shot.

Initially, he thought the lambs may have been attacked by a dog, but the puncture marks were too clean and there was no tearing.

When he went around the flock on Friday, there were no problems.

He suspected the lambs were shot later on Friday or on Friday night.

Neighbours did not hear any shots, which is why he believed either an air gun or small-calibre rifle with a silencer was used.

Mr Ludemann has notified police about the incident.
