Shag Point Alarms triggered

False alarms by Shag Point sirens are worrying Waitaki emergency services who fear people may ignore a genuine emergency.

The false alarms started about a week ago - there was another one about 5.30pm yesterday - when a software fault in alarm activation computers at the Fire Service in Wellington linked the Shag Point alarms to Weston.

Every time the Weston alarm is activated, so are those at Shag Point.

Waitaki District Council emergency services manager Chris Raine said yesterday if the Shag Point alarms went off, residents should phone 111 to check whether it was an emergency and they should move to the evacuation points.

The problem was being worked on and it was hoped it could be fixed within a few days.
