Police are investigating a spate of burglaries at rural properties in North Otago, including one where a ute was burned out.

At least four properties were targeted between Saturday and Monday and a range of items taken.

A house in Homestead Rd was entered on Saturday and an Xbox gaming console, jewellery and clothing stolen, and on Monday afternoon or early evening at least 500 litres of petrol and diesel was taken from an Airedale Rd property.

Those burglaries were followed by two others, both believed to have been carried out overnight on Monday.

Two cash registers were taken after a break-in at an industrial building in Seven Mile Rd between 5pm on Monday and 6am yesterday, and an unknown quantity of fuel, a chainsaw and other farming equipment was stolen from a Mt Misery Rd property.

A silver Mitsubishi Triton flat-bed ute reported stolen from a Kakanui Valley Rd address on Monday, and which police believe was used in the Airedale Rd burglary, was later found burned out in Old Mill Rd.

Sgt Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said police had not ruled out the possibility the burglaries were linked.

''They certainly can happen in clusters and at this stage it is not clear whether it is one group of offenders that are very busy, or if it's people being victimised by different offenders.

''There is obviously a pattern at the moment of rural properties being targeted so we would advise people to be vigilant about their security and be alert to strange vehicles coming on their properties. If anyone has been offered cheap fuel for sale, we would be interested in hearing about that, too.''

-A 25-year-old Kurow man was arrested and charged with wilful damage after an incident at a Kurow address about 10pm on Sunday. The man is set to appear in the Oamaru District Court on October 16.
