School pupils yesterday started using new, high-tech whiteboards for the first time following the opening of a new $600,000 teaching wing at Oamaru Intermediate School (OIS).
The school's new West block, which includes interactive touch-screen whiteboards and allows teachers to open up adjoining classrooms, took five months to build.
Acting principal Deidre Senior said it would provide a ''modern learning environment'' for children and promote ''new ways of learning''.
Board of Trustees chairman Lyndon McLay said the Ministry of Education had provided some of the funds for the new building but the board had invested a ''significant'' amount to ''up-spec'' the electronics originally planned for the teaching wing.
