'Satisfied' with snow clearing

A Civil Defence debriefing may indicate if any changes are needed in the way roads are cleared after snow or floods, but Waitaki District Council roading manager Michael Voss is ''pretty satisfied we got it right'' in two major events in the past two weeks.

''There is no reason to think we need to change our [council] policies,'' he said.

However, he acknowledged that could depend on the Civil Defence debriefing after the recent floods and snow in North Otago.

Criteria to be considered when clearing roads, included safety of contractors, whether there was a threat to life, to improve access to homes and provide access to stock.

At the weekend, Waitaki emergency services manager Chris Raine went to Macraes, where there had been complaints about the time taken to clear roads of snow, and spoke to some property owners.

On the whole, he was satisfied with the way the emergency was handled.

''From a Civil Defence perspective, I thought it [clearing roads of snow] was reasonably all right.''

He said that there was a lack of information when the snow first hit, but by June 24, it was flowing through for decisions to be made.

Civil Defence did a ''welfare run'' with a helicopter to deliver bread, milk and newspapers to homes isolated in the Macraes area. Feedback was it was well received.

However, he also said there needed to be clarity about road clearing.

The efforts of Civil Defence volunteers and staff in the flood and snow events which closed down areas in the Waitaki district towards the end of last month have been praised by Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton.

At this week's council meeting in Palmerston, Mr Familton said they had ''performed to a very high standard'' during both emergencies, showing what an effective team they were under emergency services manager Chris Raine.

The Civil Defence system was ''tested, responded and successful''.

People who had contacted Mr Familton said they were kept well informed, and were positive about the assistance and responses of staff and volunteers.

He also paid tribute to contractors, organisations and businesses who helped during the emergencies, along with volunteers in rural areas throughout the district.
