Up to 100 yachts will grace Lake Aviemore this weekend for the Meridian Aviemore Classic, New Zealand's biggest freshwater regatta.
Some competitors are already based at Otematata this week getting their yachts and crews ready.
The regatta is run by the Timaru Yacht and Power Boat Club and this is the 22nd year it has been held.
It attracts competitors ranging from serious sailors to those in it for fun.
Race secretary Charlie Orton, of Timaru, said between 80 and 100 yachts were expected to take part, probably fewer than last year, when the event also included the New Zealand trailer yacht championships and because of competition from the Waimate 50 anniversary street race.
On Saturday, there will be five to six championship races, depending on the weather, starting with a briefing from 8am to 10am then the first event at 11am.
On Sunday, the Aviemore Classic will be held, which is two laps of Lake Aviemore starting at 10am from the top of the lake.
