Rural water cut

Some rural residents in North Otago were still having to cope with closed roads and dirty drinking water yesterday because of this week's heavy rain.

The Waitaki District Council said pumping stations on the Hampden-Moeraki, Herbert-Waianakarua, and Windsor- Kauru Hill rural water supplies had been turned off because water quality was poor after recent rainfall.

Council public information officer Elton Crane said residents in those areas might also be affected by road closures.

On Wednesday, 16 roads in the district were closed due to flooding, and although some had reopened yesterday, 13 either remained closed or were closed for the first time yesterday.

Rocklands Rd, Cormacks-Kia ora Rd, Gards Road, Elderslie Rd, Brookstead Rd, Dansey's Pass and Smith Rd were the latest routes to be closed.

"If you do not have road access to obtain supplies, or clean drinking water, contact the Waitaki District Council on 434-6400 for assistance."

Water supplies in some rural areas have been shut off. Mr Crane also advised residents to check the council website, www.waitaki.govt.nz., for updates on road closures.

Customers on the Herbert-Waianakarua, Kauru Hill, Windsor and Hampden-Moeraki rural water supplies should conserve water and boil drinking water "until further notice", he said.
