Rubbish transfer station set to close

Herbert's rubbish transfer station will close on July 1, the Waitaki District Council has decided.

The decision was made this week as part of finalising the council's 2009-19 long term council community plan.

The transfer station is south of Herbert on State Highway 1.

Its future has been in doubt for some years, after a review by the council of its solid waste system; and more recently because of its close proximity to alternative facilities at Oamaru and Hampden.

Solid waste officer Gerry O'Neill said the council had to make some difficult decisions regarding which services the community could afford to provide.

Closing the Herbert transfer station will save the community $25,000 next financial year, and $33,000 a year after that.

It will be replaced with a drop-off point for recyclables.

The location of the drop-off point is yet to be decided.

However, it will be in the Herbert township.
