Yesterday, four cranes worked in unison to lift two sections of the new building’s roof into place. The third section will go up today.
Project manager George Kelcher said it was a "very exciting" step in the development of the new 3000sqm premises on State Highway 1, at Oamaru’s northern entrance.
"It actually looks like we’re starting to see some real progress," Mr Kelcher said.
Road Metals was established in 1955 as North Otago Road Metal.
Since then, the crushing and aggregate supply company has expanded to Christchurch, Twizel, Kaikoura and Central Otago and now employs more than 200 staff across the South Island, including about 50 in Oamaru.
The company bought the land for the new office and workshop development in Oamaru in 2016, wanting a site with better access and visibility than its current Caledonian Rd base.
It was also an opportunity to combine its Oamaru operations with Kiwi Concrete, which is part of the Road Metals group.
It was a "major, major investment", Mr Kelcher said.
The project was on track to be completed by Christmas — "subject to anything unforeseen" — and the company hoped to move in by early next year.
"It’s all going quite well," Mr Kelcher said.
