Having already driven his tractor nearly 27,000km around the world, taking part in the South Island tractor trek will be a walk in the park for Dunedin man Ian Begg.

He reacquainted himself this week with his tractor and caravan, with which he set a world record for the longest journey by a tractor in 1993-94 while travelling through the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

They have been on display in the Oamaru Auto Collection in The Woolstore complex for the past few years.

This week, Mr Begg headed to Kurow to join the trek, a fundraising venture for the Child Cancer Foundation.

It was a good opportunity to give the tractor "a bit of air again" and both the tractor and caravan would return to the museum at the trek's conclusionMr Begg said the good thing about travelling by tractor was the view of the countryside and, with a top speed of about 20kmh, there was an ability to have brief conversations as he passed people.

The problem was the noise.

Allan Wills, from the Oamaru Auto Collection, said the tractor and caravan were very popular with visitors.
