Meridian Energy had to lower the level of the Waitaki River so police could reach and retrieve the body of Waimate man Marshall Robert Smith on Sunday.

A Meridian spokeswoman said the company worked with police to reduce the consented flow rate of the Waitaki dam from 330cumecs to 220cumecs, allowing emergency services to retrieve the body.

Mr Smith (32) died late on Sunday afternoon while on a kayaking trip on the river, near Kurow.

Police declined to provide any details about the incident, including whether Mr Smith was wearing a life jacket, was kayaking alone, whether he came out of his kayak or what conditions were like at the time.

Water Safety New Zealand chief executive Jonty Mills said rivers were ''highly unpredictable'' and more people drowned in them than in any other water environment in New Zealand.

''Kayakers and others using rivers for recreation need to be aware of the risks and prepare accordingly.''

On Monday night, members of the Glenavy cricket team gathered to remember Mr Smith, an all-rounder, and his contribution to their community.

Last night, Kurow Rugby Club, of which Mr Smith was captain, planned a gathering to remember him.
