Hampden and Moeraki people have been given the chance to voice their views on whether blue pictorial signs which advertise their towns should be retained or replaced.

Hampden woman Colleen Dooley organised a petition for people to vote on the issue. The petition was last night presented to the Waihemo Community Board.

The Waitaki Development Board and Waitaki District Council has been replacing the "blue signs" at towns throughout the district with "district branding signs".

The blue signs have pictures of attractions in each of the individual towns, whereas the district signs have the town's name, urging people to visit.

However, the Waihemo Community Board wants the blue signs retained because, it maintains, they better advertise what is unique to each town.

Mrs Dooley started her petition late last week, giving people three options - to retain the blue signs, replace them with the new district branding signs or "don't care".

The towns liked the blue signs because they were individual and reflected their attractions, she said.

The Waitaki District Council considered the request to retain the signs at its meeting on August 11 after the community board had told it the towns were proud of their signs and wanted them retained.

The community board said it had been promised it would be consulted before any signs were replaced.

The council directed the Waitaki Development Board to consult with the community board before any signs were replaced.
