Oamaru's old Awamoa toilets have been demolished while the $422,000 replacement is up and running.

In April the Waitaki District Council received $172,000 from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Tourism Infrastructure Fund to replace the 48-year-old toilets.

The council added $250,000 to the project.

At the time, recreation project and assets officer Mark Burgher said the toilet block no longer met hygiene standards and was difficult to keep clean.

The facility "had reached the end of its useful life".

It also had asbestos mixed into the paint of the roof.

Landscaping and a mural are still to be completed on the new toilets.

A council spokesman said the project was running under budget at present.

So far $101,000 had been spent on building work, including demolition and reinstatement, $156,000 had been spent on the supply and delivery of the new prefab toilets, $30,000 had been spent on engineering, compliance and project management and $35,000 had been spent on services.

The figures were not the final costs, which would be released once the project was fully completed.
