Members of the North Otago FUNtastic Red Hatters had about 90 women in stitches with a fashion parade at a combined Rural Women and Women's Institute competition day in the Kakanui Hall this week.
Formed in North Otago in February, the Red Hatters now have about 35 members, and (from left) Tina Lawrence, Marian Renalson, Joan Sutherland, Barbara Woodward, Fay Pile, Jan Thomas, Janice Cook and Evon Varley were among those on stage for the performance.
The North Otago group is one of 85 in New Zealand, giving women ''the opportunity to grow old a little disgracefully and to do it with attitude''.
There are no rules, just one request - when they get together to wear red on their head and something purple below, adding other colours and bling.
Most outfits come from op shops, are made, remade or come as gifts and hand-me-downs.
Activities include pot luck meals, eating out, picnics, visiting homes for the elderly and even a no-talent contest.
A series of competitions held for members of both women's organisations in Otago and Southland attracted about 140 entries.
It is the third time it has been held.
