"Steampunk - tomorrow as it used to be", organised by the League of Victorian Imagineers, has already smashed attendance records and yesterday the exhibition had its 10,000th visitor.
The previous record was 6000, set by the inaugural Steampunk show last year.
The patronage could mean the gallery will reach its annual target of 16,000 visitors within six months.
One visitor this week was Martin Horspool, from Auckland, who has three exhibits on show.
Mr Horspool, who runs Retrobots and creates robots from recycled material, combined a trip down to the Burt Munro Challenge at Invercargill at the weekend with a visit to the Steampunk exhibition.
The exhibition of about 100 works by 40 artists will be dismantled from 4.30pm this Sunday, although some exhibits will remain for a week to 10 days in the upstairs exhibition areas.
"It's been an outstanding success," Mr Smith said of the exhibition.
The best days were 997 visitors on October 30 when a street party was held to celebrate the opening of the exhibition, 690 on November 21, which was the final day of the of the Victorian Heritage Celebrations when the Victorian Fete was held, and 629 on the Saturday of the celebrations.
