Oamaru's historic Harbour St was on fire last night with these ''flames'' leaping up the whitestone walls - and thousands came to watch.

The street was lit up for the second annual Oamaru on Fire, billed as a ''pyrotechnic, fire, steam, lighting and sound spectacular''.

This year's festival was a bigger production than last year's, particularly the lighting, pyrotechnic shows and sound. Unseasonably warm weather attracted a big crowd well before the event started at 6.30pm.

By 8pm, the street was crowded for an evening of non-stop fire-themed family entertainment.

During the evening, there were live performances on two stages, one at each end of Harbour St, including local and New Zealand entertainers and featuring the Beat Girls.

Artist Donna Demente had a mask parade, and movies projected along the walls.

The aim was to showcase the Victorian buildings in winter and at night, providing affordable entertainment.

Traction engines, motorbikes, hot rods, helicopter flights and a regular boom from a 25-pound howitzer were other attractions.

Even the fire brigade joined in, with demonstrations and its command unit from Dunedin.

The evening was capped off with a ''fire finale'' display just before 9pm.
