Punk gears up

From time machines to movies, this year's steampunk exhibition in Oamaru is shaping up to be "breathtaking", organisers say.

Expressions of interest closed on Friday and there were 24, although it was known there were many more entries intended, Helen Jansen said.

The second Steampunk: Tomorrow As It Used to Be exhibition will run from October 23 until December 5 at the Forrester Gallery.

Last year's exhibition attracted 6000 visitors and was the best attended in the gallery's 25-year history.

This year, there will be a dedicated ray gun gallery "as just about every bloke who has spoken to us has come with an idea about a ray gun", organising committee leader Iain Clark said.

Weta Workshops designer Greg Broadmore will be a special guest at Oamaru's Victorian heritage celebrations in November.
