People will get a chance next month to have a say on speed limits throughout the Waitaki district when a draft review is released for public comment.
The draft is expected to be approved by the Waitaki District Council on August 7 and will go out for consultation after that, but only applies to council roads and not to state highways.
Included in proposed changes is lowering the speed limit in Duntroon, except on SH83, from 70kmh to 50kmh, a move which the community has been pushing for since it was raised in 2005.
Last year, the Duntroon community renewed its call for a speed limit lower than the present 70kmh on the town's roads and also wanted the New Zealand Transport Agency, responsible for SH83, to do the same.
The review also includes other proposed changes throughout the district.
The council is proposing 17 changes to speed limits in the district, mainly in or around townships, after a three-yearly survey last year which measured roads against national standards.
While the survey recommended no changes based on the standards, council staff identified where some changes could be made based on requests or local knowledge.
Some other changes include:
• 30kmh on Waterfront Rd and Marine Parade at Oamaru Harbour, instead of 50kmh.
• 70kmh limit in Windsor township, instead of 100kmh.
• Extending the 50kmh zone in Oamaru to Saleyards Rd, Bluestone Dr, lower Solway St and Bluestone Heights, instead of 80kmh.
• 50kmh for District Rd, Palmerston, instead of 70kmh.
• Extending the 70kmh limit at Maheno into the 100kmh zone.
• 70kmh in Ngapara township, instead of 100kmh.
• Imposing a 30kmh limit on Carlisle St at Hampden beach, instead of 50kmh.
• Extending the 50kmh limit and making changes around Weston.
