About 500m of State Highway 1 has been reduced to one lane in North Oamaru this week as NZ Transport Agency contractors begin a roading programme between Virgil and Raglan Sts.

On Saturday, the work would change from the southbound lane to the northbound lane, the NZTA said in a statement. NZTA network manager Chris Harris said that a contractor had delivered flyers "to make everyone immediately affected by these works aware of potential delays''.

Access to some side streets was limited, but crews were keeping one lane of the state highway open at all times and manual traffic control would be in place throughout construction, he said.

The work was expected to be completed next week.
