A three-week police blitz on teenage motorists in Oamaru caught almost 30 young drivers failing to adhere to learner and restricted driver's licence rules.
Between May 28 and June 17 police conducted a crackdown on cyclists and teen drivers, and although only eight cyclists were caught not wearing helmets, 29 learner and restricted drivers were reported to have ignored licence restrictions.
Senior Constable Ewen Graham said while police were "reassured" by the number of youngsters wearing cycling helmets, the high number of young drivers breaching their licence conditions was worrying.
"It is a bit of a concern, particularly given the current campaign that we are running, which highlights that restricted drivers have the highest statistics for crashes."
Restricted driver's licence rules ban young motorists from carrying unlicensed passengers without a fully licensed supervisor. They also prohibit restricted drivers from driving without a supervisor between 10pm and 5am.
