Police are not commenting on how a 14-month-old baby suffered serious injuries in Oamaru.
The boy was flown from his home on the corner of Thames Highway and Lynn St to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition last night.
An update on his condition was not available this morning, and the nature of the injuries would not be discussed, Southern district communications manager Nic Barkley said.
"There is nothing further available from police at this time."
Senior Sergeant Darryl Lennane, of Dunedin, said last night that the injury was reported to emergency services in the afternoon.
"Police are attempting to establish the nature of the injury. The main priority at present is support for the family and child," he said.
"There are no indicators the matter is a criminal act at this time.''
