Just two days after Oamaru residents started a petition to improve safety at a well-known accident hot-spot in the town's north end, the site was again the scene of another crash - this time involving an unmarked police car.

Three cars were involved in the crash at the pedestrian crossing near the intersection of State Highway 1 and Frome St at 2.50pm yesterday. Senior Constable Craig Sew Hoy confirmed one of the cars was an unmarked police car from Dunedin.

Snr Const Sew Hoy said the crash happened after the police car stopped at the pedestrian crossing.

''The second car stopped and the third one has not stopped for some reason and pushed them into each other,'' he said.

No injuries were reported, and no-one was attempting to cross when the accident happened. Inquiries were continuing. The pedestrian crossing had already been the scene of 20 incidents in the past five years.

Although the New Zealand Transport Agency was investigating options to make the crossing safer, a petition, which aimed to get Minister of Transport Gerry Brownlee involved, was launched in Oamaru on Wednesday.
